To: President Biden; Secretary of State Antony Blinken; National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain, Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg.

Biden, NATO, Negotiate an End to the Black Sea Blockade in Ukraine. STOP global starvation.

A Yemeni refugee in a displaced person's camp inside Yemen (Reuters.) Ukraine and Russia account for 30-40% of wheat imports in Yemen, where millions face starvation.

Petition Text

Instead of sending anti-ship missiles to Ukraine to destroy the Russian fleet, negotiate the lifting of some sanctions on Russia in return for Russia's end to the blockade of the Black Sea. Sending weapons to break the blockade could trigger retaliation and escalation from Russia that surely would not stand for the destruction of its fleet. Releasing sanctions in return for concessions would be a sane and diplomatic approach that considers the urgency of distributing grain to millions facing starvation in the Middle East and Africa.

The head of the United Nations food program predicts “Hell on Earth” from the hunger crisis triggered by the Ukraine War unless we can end this blockade and end this war. The way to do that is through negotiations and diplomacy, not escalation that will turn the Black Sea into an even more dangerous war zone.

In fact, the U.S. and NATO's escalation of the war with sophisticated weaponry, intelligence and blanket sanctions is leading us down a dangerous path of protracted war, if not nuclear catastrophe.

Additionally, do not listen to Adam Smith, Chair of the House Armed Services Committee, who wants to send long-range missiles and killer drones to Ukraine, another move sure to bring us closer to a direct war with nuclear Russia. Listen, instead, to the people in this country who are weary of the economic hardships resulting, in part, from the war. Listen to the majority of the US public who, when polled, would not support further military involvement in Ukraine if it risked nuclear war.

Your administration's support for a negotiated settlement is crucial to ending this crisis to feed the starving, spare more lives, limit environmental destruction and avoid a world war.

Support a negotiated settlement.

Why is this important?

Join this campaign for negotiation, not escalation in Ukraine to press for an end to the war in Ukraine. Wars end in diplomatic agreements, so rather than prolonging the deadly fighting to risk nuclear catastrophe, global famine and further environmental degradation, let us call for a diplomatic agreement and ceasefire.
